Greg Sager is a Jew who needed a creative outlet, thus his Etsy store “Greg’s Creative Outlet” was born. Sager sells a plethora of fun, crocheted Judaica ranging from Harry Potter and Johan Santana New York Mets kippah to beautiful turquoise “Shabbat and Stars” challah covers.

Fifteen years ago, when Sager was a camper at the URJ’s Camp Eisner, one of his male counselors (who is now a rabbi) had picked up crocheting while working at a female juvenile detention center where the only thing the girls were allowed to do for fun was craft with yarn. So they taught him, and he taught all of the campers, including Sager. One thing led to another and, 10 years later, Sager made 87 kippot for his sister’s bat mitzvah.

“Some of the designs I do are patterns that I think will be interesting to make and will look good,” says Sager. “But people have always come up to me and asked if I could make them one that has certain design.”

The kippot in his Etsy store are a mix of his original ideas and former custom designs that he thinks would be popular. Each yarmulke is handmade and took between two to 10 hours to complete — depending on the the design.
