Pinning down organization

for The Brooklyn Paper

Your grandma’s bulletin board was cork and was colorfully plastered in coupons, grocery lists, postcards, and family photos. Your kid’s bulletin board is online and it’s called Pinterest. And no disrespect to bubbie, but this virtual bulletin board trumps the tangible board of yesteryear like Godzilla trumps Tokyo, Trump Tower trumps your view of Central Park, or how Trump’s hair trumps Trump’s dignity.

Any which way — you get the idea.

With its user-generated photos and image-driven boards, Pinterest has encouraged its users to create online bulletin boards plastered with hundreds of photos that are centered around specific subjects like ’90s nostalgia, creative pizzas (pepperoni and carmelized pumpkin, why not?), or inter-species buddying (think: a puppy snuggling up to an orphaned baby cheetah and a monkey riding a pig). Some of these themed boards — like ones that focus on cakes, invitations, dresses, party favors, candy, and even, well, party themes — can provide a vast inventory of inspiration that could make a Greek muse blush.

According to Linda Kaye, owner and founder of Party Makers, Pinterest and other social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, contribute to party planning and organization. Plus, because kids are drawn to social media, they’re more likely to participate in the party planning process.

“Kids are getting more involved because they’re tech-savvy and can create their own web pages,” Kaye says.

With the click of a mouse, inspiration shots can be easily shared with anyone involved in coordinating the celebration. And to build some pre-party anticipation, guests can be given access to certain inspiration boards that can tease photos of what’s to come on your child’s big day. Other planning technology includes handy, hand-held “to-do” lists and task management apps like reQall, Evernote, and Wunderlist available on smartphones. These apps can de-stress day-of operations ensuring smooth execution when doing things like scrolling through RSVP lists, calling the caterers, and ensuring everything arrives on time.
